I WANNA BE A SUPERMODEL...
Being a model comes with some unbelievable opportunities; travel the world, meet varied, fascinating people, wear designers cloths, look amazing ALL THE TIME and make some good earnings. But it is also a highly competitive industry, where beauty always evolve, change, one day you're the next best thing and the next season your look is already obsolete… it is also about your dedication, professional approach, knowing what you're up against and willing to overcome anything and off course having a brilliant agent and a little luck…
It is a known fact the most of the top models were just walking/shopping etc. when they were scouted by a modeling scout and the rest is history… but for all the rest that haven’t being discovered, yet! Here are some tips to help you with the first steps to becoming a model:
First, look at yourself and realistically review yourself, your face, skin, body, weight, bones structure. If you are small (up to 1.74m) but you have nice hair, good skin, smile and a nice formed body – you can try to be a photo model. If you are very tall (1.74 – 1.81c), skinny (with hips no more than 90 cm and waist no more than 60-65cm, bust in the borders of 80-90), good skin, hair and you are 15 and up – maybe you are the next top model or at least on your way to be the new 'it girl', keep in mind it is not easy, comes with a lot of effort, hard work & dedication and most importantly you have to grow thick skin (metaphorically speaking…);
Think about your age, if you are very young (13 – 14) you might not fully understand what you are up against, dealing with hard situations (mainly on your own), you have to be cautious and stay away from bad choices or destructive influences, things that are hard at any age but easier to deal with when you are a bit older, matured & preferably after you finished your studies (you don’t want to be part of the 'stupid' statistics do you?..). the best age to start would probably be 16 – 17 when designers still adore your girly figure and child-like features;
Next step: get discovered. There are many ways to do that (modeling contests, modeling schools, MySpace & off course the web). We suggest do some researching for liable and big modeling agencies, sending them your photos, every big agency has a 'new faces' page where you can upload your photos with some information, who knows? Could be the right time for your look or something about you looks like a certain beauty type and you will be contacted and invited for casting or an appointment with a scout, or you will be advised on what to do to start modeling. You also have to take under consideration that you might not be what they are looking for or you will be considered as 'not modeling material' but some of the biggest supermodel where rejected several times and did not give up (Cindy Crawford, Lara Stone..) and maybe you really are not a model.. that doesn’t mean you are not a beautiful person and there is a very good reason for you to be on this planet and being a clothing rack just isn’t one of those reasons…
If you are a model – congratulations! You are beautiful; a muse for fashion designers, being photographed for magazine editorials, walking for major fashion brands… it’s a dream coming true! Be prepared to work hard (especially during fashion weeks!), you have to be always fresh, ready, representative & have a constant good mood (no one cares if you are sick, lonely, hungry, sad, bored, tired etc…you have your model friends to share stories with, your agency to support and your family to call and get your energy restored). You will be traveling a lot, move a lot, you might have to go to up to 25 (and more..) castings a day, you have to be up & ready any hour of the day, sometimes all day long to work, hair & makeup artists are not always so nice to you; they are working hard & long hours too, they don’t care if the chosen mascara makes your eyes water or if your hair is damaged.. costs of the trade…
BUT there are also plenty of good sides, you earn good money, you get to travel around the world, your life is interesting & special, you are surrounded & involved in a creative, artistic environment, you are practically a celebrity, sooo many parties, photoshoots, events, shows, so much experience, be close to famous names, young girls wants to be you & young guys wants to be with you…
Just be prepared that as the seasons change also appearance can change, tastes & looks, it can be over quickly or last for a while – also up to you; take an example from smart models that thought of the future and used wisely their earned money, connections and experience.
